allergic reaction to gluten

Gluten Myth #2: If you don't have gas,
bloating or other digestive problems,
you don't have a gluten problem

It's true that the most common signs of celiac and general gluten intolerance are bloating, stomach aches and diarrhea. But if those are the only symptoms your doctor is using to diagnose you, you could be in trouble.

Gluten intolerance can cause any of 300 different symptoms—and they vary widely in intensity. You could have explosive, uncontrollable episodes of diarrhea—or your digestive irregularities could be so subtle you don't even notice them. Sometimes, you can have celiac digestive issues for so long that you're not even aware your digestion isn't normal.

Gluten Myth #3: If a blood test doesn't show
celiac disease, then gluten isn't causing
your health symptoms

If you suspect you have celiac disease, ask your doctor to order a celiac panel blood test. But be aware that the test isn't always accurate.

Eating a gluten-free diet when the blood test is administered will cause the results to be negative—even if you have celiac disease. Besides, you can test negative for celiac disease—and still be suffering with gluten intolerance!

Your doctor will confirm a positive result with an endoscopic biopsy, but what are you supposed to do if the blood test comes back negative?

The only way to rule out gluten as the culprit behind your symptoms is to eat a gluten-free diet and see how you feel. If your symptoms improve, then you are most likely gluten intolerant and need to avoid gluten.

a gluten-free diet is optional

on your gluten-free diet

will help you lose weight

With gluten making you sick and interfering with the absorption of nutrients from food, one would expect most sufferers to be thin and emaciated. But they're quite the opposite.

People with celiac disease and gluten intolerance are frequently overweight—or even obese. So it would be good news to many if eating a gluten-free diet would aid in weight loss. But that's not always the case...

Many gluten-free breads and other baked goods are not only expensive—they're also high in fat and calories. And that can make you pack on the pounds.

Eating foods that are naturally gluten-free is cheaper and healthier. But even that may not help you lose weight at first. You see... many people gain weight on a gluten-free diet as the body begins to heal and properly absorb nutrients.

Gluten Myth #7: Gluten is required to be listed
as an ingredient on food labels

If this was true, it would make eating gluten-free so much easier! But it's not.

The FDA requires wheat—along with dairy, eggs, crustacean shellfish, fish, peanuts, tree nuts and soy—to be listed as an allergen on food labels in the United States, but not gluten.

Of course, the allergy warning for wheat on a label instantly clues you in on the inevitable presence of gluten—so the FDA requirement is helpful. But foods that fall under the jurisdiction of the USDA do not have to include allergen labeling, so dealing with these items can be tricky for those with celiac and gluten sensitivity.

And here's something else to consider...

Where your food is produced and packaged oftentimes determines whether it's gluten free. Many foods are processed in a plant or on machinery that also handles wheat products or other foods containing gluten, which causes cross-contamination. If this is the case, it's pointed out on the food label.

You find this situation many times with oats. Because of cross-contamination, you should only eat oats that are certified gluten free. But even then, you should proceed with caution. Some people with celiac disease are unable to tolerate oats at all.

Now if a food contains proteins that come from wheat, the term "wheat" is supposed to be included somewhere in the ingredient list. It shows up in parenthesis after the particular ingredient. For example, food starch (wheat) may be used on a food label to alert you to the presence of wheat. So keep your eyes peeled.
